Creating Your Solo Show with Evan Zes

A solo show doesn’t have to tell your life story. One event in your life can become a compelling evening of theatre.

Join actor, writer, and director Evan Zes for a workshop in turning personal experiences into original theatre. Drawing on the creation of his two solo shows, Rent Control and Sorry for Laughing, Evan helps students find a story worth telling and shape it into a theatrical journey with a beginning, middle, and end. Through writing exercises, improvisation, and exploring material through performance, students develop distinct characters, discover the comedy in their material, and build confidence in their voices as writers and performers.

In a profession with plenty of downtime, creating your own show gives you a vehicle to get your work out there—and a way to keep growing between jobs. Students begin developing solo pieces they can continue shaping beyond the workshop, while exploring practical questions about producing their work, finding audiences, and getting it onstage.

Available as a one-day workshop, a multi-day residency, or a full-length course, tailored to the needs of your program.

The workshop can also be paired with a performance of Evan’s award-winning solo play, Rent Control, followed by a discussion about the process of creating, developing, and producing original work.
